Date added: 01/10/2012 CNET - Asus keeps faith in Netbooks with the Eee PC Flare

With the exception of Asus, other vendors appeared to have moved decisively from Netbooks to the Ultrabook camp.

These new Asus Eee PC Flare Netbooks were revealed earlier last week, but they have now been officially launched at CES. With a 10-inch form factor and Intel's latest Cedar Trail Atom processor, the basic Eee PC Flare model, the 1025C, doesn't deviate from the typical Netbook formula. You'll still only get 1GB of RAM with a 320GB HDD along with integrated graphics. However, with a starting price of just US$299, these updated Netbooks remain as affordable as before.

Asus has a couple of other models in this series: The Flare 1025CE uses a slightly faster Atom processor and the X101CH has a slimmer chassis as it swaps the standard six-cell battery for a three-cell. There is also a 12-inch AMD Fusion-based model that is more powerful than the Intel Atom variants, but at a cost--the Eee PC Flare 1225B goes for US$399. All the models will be available in the US starting in February.

Given that Asus did come up with the first Netbook, it's understandable that the company may be reluctant to say goodbye to this form factor just yet.

Asus is also promising a second-quarter release for its much-delayed Eee Pad Memo which was initially announced at CES 2011.
