The CPU is the basic component of a computer system – the element that defines the productivity of a laptop together with its energy efficiency. Low energy consumption levels are a must for all mobile devices because they define how long your laptop will work when not connected to an external power supply. Additional energy saving possibilities come from cutting edge functions decreasing the frequency of the CPU when the workload is not too high (such technologies as "PowerNow!", "Enhanced SpeedStep Technology").
Most laptop CPUs are manufactured by Intel and AMD (Advanced Micro Devices Inc.), which produce all kinds of processors ranging from very cheap to very expensive and intended for performing a wide variety of tasks ranging from basic to most complex. The most popular laptop CPU of today is Core 2 Duo (dual-core CPU). The most productive one is, without doubt, Core 2 Extreme (quad-core CPU). The latter processor is usually used in the most expensive laptops. AMD’s dual-core Turion 64 X2 CPU (a version of Athlon 64 X2 intended for mobile devices) sports the levels of productivity similar to those of Core 2 Duo.
Single-core processors (Core Solo, Core 2 Solo) can hardly compete with their dual-core alternatives in productivity while their energy consumption levels remain low. It should be noticed that single-core CPUs are not much cheaper than dual-core ones, which is why we recommend you to stick to laptops with Core 2 Duo. Pentium Dual-Core, Celeron Dual Core, Celeron M CPUs are used in budget laptop models, which are productive enough for office applications, email software, Internet surfing, music and video.
The smallest mobile devices usually come with Atom CPU, which consumes less power than other CPUs but is productive enough for performing basic tasks. Atom-based laptops can work long hours without connecting to external power supplies. Sempron, Turion 64, Pentium M CPU models are already considered outdated and are rarely used in laptops.
